I would say playing PC games has become a lot easier over the years in general. There have always been extra things to download for the PC for a lot of games (almost none to improve the visuals though) and there was no automatic Steam patching, you had to do everything manually 6-7 years ago as you know. :) I personally don't really care, I'm used to working with configs and I sometimes download seperate mods and addons.
